Pastor Jim Furey with his wife Carol
Jim is the oldest of five boys, all raised in an Irish / Italian Catholic family. Born in Passaic, New Jersey, his family moved to Buffalo, New York when he was a sophomore. Sports was his thing; active in football, wrestling and lacrosse (three from his high school team made it to the NFL). It wasn’t until college at Clarion University in Pennsylvania where he met his future wife, Carol before he was ever introduced to another faith outside of Catholicism.
Being a good Catholic, Jim argued with his fiancee about each other’s faith; this continued for several years into their marriage. Carol was a Christian Scientist. They loved each other and marriage was bliss except for the topic of religion. Both were filled with stubborn, unrelenting pride; both refused to give in…even to the point of dragging each other back and forth to each other’s services every Sunday for five years. Then by the sovereign grace of Almighty God, the great conductor of heaven and earth, in His glorious majesty blessed Jim and Carol with their first child, which invoked the conversation… “We need to raise our daughter in one faith!” In God’s providence, this led them back to the church where they got married (pride refused to allow them to get married in each other’s church). The pastor visited them and for the first time, they heard the good news of the free gift of eternal life through Jesus Christ. Both Jim and Carol repented of their sins and joyously received Christ into their life by faith. It was the Lord Jesus who turned hardened hearts, filled with selfishness, into hearts of flesh that melt before His majesty!
Life has never been the same! They have been blessed with four kids (Christine, Laura, Megan and Drew); all raised in a home where Christ is preeminent and the Word of God is central. Jim was a banker calling on corporate clients for over fifteen years before God eventually called him into pastoral ministry. Jim attended Reformed Theological Seminary in Jackson, MS and later became the organizing pastor of Trinity Presbyterian Church… a PCA church (Presbyterian Church in America) planted on the west side of Indy (Brownsburg area) for the glory of God.
